We present our work on developing anatomically realistic, quantitative multiparametric MRI (qMRI) phantoms designed to standardize imaging of both healthy and diseased breast tissue. The lack of standardized, morphology-accurate phantoms currently limits the effectiveness of qMRI in both clinical and research settings. Without realistic tissue-mimicking models, radiologists, technologists, and researchers face challenges in learning optimal acquisition protocols and interpreting quantitative data.

Conventional relaxometry and diffusion phantoms provide quantitative references but fail to capture the anatomical complexity and heterogeneity of the human breast. To address these limitations, we have developed a patient-derived, 3D-printed breast phantom that replicates realistic breast morphology and composition and incorporates quantitative relaxation and diffusion (ADC) parameters. It includes mimics for fibroglandular and adipose tissues, as well as benign and malignant tumor regions, enabling physiologically relevant representation of both normal and diseased states.

This work establishes a foundation for organ-specific qMRI quality control and assurance (QC/QA), improving reproducibility, training, and the development of robust AI models for quantitative breast imaging.

CaliberMRI announces release of the qDisc, a new quantitative MRI phantom for added functionality of the Medium ACR Phantom

BOULDER, Colo., Nov. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — CaliberMRI, an industry leader in standardizing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), announced the release of a new quantitative MRI phantom compatible with the Medium ACR phantom. CaliberMRI’s qDisc (quantitative Dual Imaging Standardization Compartment) Model 141 allows sites to baseline T1, T2, ADC, and Proton Density in a single slice when scanning the Medium ACR phantom. The qDisc includes the Company’s patented MR readable LC Thermometer and is supported by qCal-MR®, an automated QA/QC analysis software. “This offering provides a practical option for gathering important quantitative metrics during routine scans with an ACR phantom,” says William Hollander, CEO of CaliberMRI. “With the rise of quantitative MRI offerings, the qDisc can be used as a first step toward harmonization of MRI scanners and AI software for analysis”. Hollander added. This phantom is intended to complement CaliberMRI’s more complete phantom platform solutions.

User Group Session – January 13th – Assessment of quantitative diffusion MRI using NIST/UCSF/CaliberMRI Breast Phantom in the I-SPY 2 Clinical Trial

Dr. Wilmes will discuss work on the I-SPY 2 clinical trials, work with the NIST/UCSF/CaliberMRI Breast Phantom and diffusion.  The talk with focus on repeatability and standardization/harmonization across sites and over time. Dr. Wilmes is a Radiology Specialist at UCSF focused on breast cancer research and quantitative Imaging.

Guest Speaker:  Dr. Pratik Mukherjee MD, PhD, UCSF

Dr. Mukherjee is a Professor in Residence in the Department Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, Bioengineering, and he is an attending neuroradiologist at the University of California, San Francisco. He is the Director of the Center for Imaging of Neurodegenerative Disease (CIND) based at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. He also directs the Neural Connectivity Laboratory (NCL) at UCSF China Basin.

 Dr. Mukherjee’s primary clinical research is the study of neurodevelopmental disorders and traumatic brain injury (TBI) using advanced neuroimaging and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) technology. His research has been focused on technical development, neuroscience and clinical applications of advanced imaging methods for mapping structure and function of the human brain, especially diffusion MRI, which is a popular technique for assessing the development and integrity of white matter and for mapping axonal fiber pathways.
 Scope:  Dr. Mukherjee will discuss his work on traumatic brain injury with the TRACK-TBI trial and on advanced neuroimaging and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) technology.
